Kuranda & Atherton Tablelands
Kuranda is a quaint village situated in the rainforest at the top of the Great Dividing Range. Known for street markets, cultural theatres and nature displays, Kuranda can be reached via the Kuranda Scenic Railway and the Skyrail Rainforest cableway.
Inland from Cairns is the fertile Plateau also known as the Atherton Tablelands. Atherton is the 'capital' of the Tablelands, a land of beautiful lakes, waterfalls, rich red soil and tropical rainforest.
Here the temperature is cooler, the pace is slower and there is a feeling of relaxation in the air.
The area also has a number of natural attractions such as the Curtain Fig Tree, Millaa Millaa Falls, crater lakes and amazing rock formations. The rich soils are also known for producing peanuts, maize and potatoes.
Atherton is ideally situated as a base to explore most places of interest in the Tablelands area. Accommodation varies from old Queensland style hotels to bed and breakfast's (B&B's), rainforest retreats, caravan parks and backpacker hostels.
Mareeba, famous for hot air ballooning and tropical fruits such as the mango and lychee, is the first window to the outback. Visit a wildlife conservation park or tour coffee plantations, taste tropical fruits and hand feed rock wallabies.
